I'm watching the Critic's Choice awards right now, and I have never missed award show drivel so much. D.L. Hughley is a funny guy, but his standard comedy fare is fast getting stale as award show banter. And OMG the awkwardness of the introductions and the weirdness of around half of the nominees (and winners, obviously) not even being there to accept. Miramax's president just got up to accept the Best Picture award because NO ONE from the film, except for ONE of its stars, was there (and he'd already been up twice - once for himself and once for someone else).
Although LOLOLOL at Leslie Mann and her foul mouth! The censors bleeped one of her f-words, but missed the second. And then Marcia Gay Harden went out to present Best Actor and made a joke about her coccyx pain and how appropriate it was for her to have such an aptly named injury as she was presenting an award to male actors (pronounce it in your head, and you'll see what she was going for). Basically, tonight was Award Show Blue. And THEN Javier Bardem made an incredibly ballsy joke about President Bush. So maybe there's something to be said for the unscripted approach. It certainly makes for unpredictability.
I know award shows are incredibly superfluous and self-congratulatory, but ... I really, really love the Oscars. Please, can we end the writer's strike before they happen? I want the gowns and the schmaltz and the montages and the awesomely bad jokes. Please fix it, plzplzplz!

Random question, since you never made any comment when I'd plug Once but you WINNARed "Falling Slowly" so I assume you've seen it...what did you think of Once? I looked before to see if you had reviewed it but unless I just missed it, I didn't see it in your past entries!
(mystery)
I only saw Once the other day - over the weekend, I think it was - which is one reason (probably the only reason) why it didn't make my top 25 of 2007. I liked it a lot, especially the use of music. And there's something so satisfying about knowing that Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova are recording music together in real life. *refuses to real-people-ship, even though I hear they're dating as well* :P
(mystery)
Go ahead and real-people ship this time, because yup, they're together! From what I read, he had known her for years and recommended her for the role, he had been doing the music for it but took over the role too when Cillian Murphy dropped out. They weren't a couple while filming, but in interviews the director talked about how there was something there between them so he used it! They didn't get together until after, while traveling around doing promotion. Last I heard they were living together in Ireland. Heh, having them be together in real life somewhat makes up for the ending of the movie where they don't get together. I thought the first time I watched it that maaaaaaaaaybe they did, since they show a bus pulling to the curb outside her apt at the end, but both actors have said in interviews they didn't get together so I'll go with that. *sigh*
And I love too that they're "real" musicians! I'm so glad I got to see them perform live, they were amazing! And yes, he performs with that old beat up guitar!
