When I called "It's Hard Out There For a Pimp" "awesome," I was referring specifically to the song performance, which I thought was quite strong, particularly homegirl bustin' it out at the end. I'm not terribly fond of rap music most of the time, but that number made me want to get up and dance. I thought it was hilarious that they won (Dolly Parton's enthusiastic reaction was especially amusing) and that they were so pleased to win. I honestly wasn't paying close attention to their acceptance ... speech.
Definitely the most surreal part of last night's awards.

I tuned it out. Dolly Parton's song was GREAT, and these fools get an oscar over PIMPIN.
I was waiting for your reaction to all the "OMG CRASH WON OVER BROKEBACK?" reactions on LJ. Since a lot of these people haven't seen Crash and you have(I think).

Well, that's truly the only way to describe it. :D

Yeah, I was rooting for Dolly, too. And the song from Crash was gorgeous. I have a feeling they split the votes, though, and that that's how the pimp song won.

Oh darn. I thought I'd get away with not saying anything. :P I keep refreshing F_W, looking for a post about it.

I guess my main pet peeve is how some people are pitting gay and racism against each other. "CRASH ONLY WON BECAUSE IT DEALT WITH RACISM!" Well hell I've seen many movies that dealt with racism get shut out, what was the excuse then?
Both are still problems in our society and I hate it when people try to "one up" the other just to prove their point I guess.

WTF?! If Crash hadn't won, no one would have been saying that the Academy was reinforcing racism! Kanye West is not on some talk show saying that the Academy doesn't care about Jewish people just because Munich didn't win. I feel bad for the Brokeback fans who are disappointed, but the Academy has not set gay rights back 50 years for not picking it as Best Picture. Perspective, people!
(mystery)
LOL WORD! I wonder if these same people saying race movies(not trying to rule out all racism, but I'm talking about movies that involve racisms against blacks like Crash did) are talking over Hollywood gave a damn when Malcom X didn't win, or that it took 1098470239 years for a black actor or actress to win.
Who will win for most zomg oppressed? Find out on the next Maury! XD
GIC!

but considering that he's (PSH) gone out of his way in every awards show (and most of his interviews) to avoid mentioning Truman Capote, and instead needs to remind people how sexy his girlfriend is (I guess so that people will know he's straight), I can't have a ton of respect for him.
The whole point of this was to make sure that the Oscars did not seem too "gay". That's why Crash won. It's much easier to get an award for, "white people feel bad about racism" than for a movie that has gays as anything more than AIDS patients or minstrels.
A very cowardly, gutless night for the Oscars, and the media will go out of their way to try to use this against gay rights.
More:
The Oscars wanted to send a message to films that feature gays are more than effeminate emotional wrecks or dying martyrs. The message was - go away.
More:
I wonder if BBM is the left's passion of the christ.
It continues in the Oscar Wrap Up thread:
somewhere that Brokeback mountain was filed under the wrong kind of Oscar category for some of the ballots and they were throwing out the votes for the wrong category
i kid you not
art imitating life
And, finally:
BBM is not an authentic movie about gays
It has been trashed for not having gay actors play the lead roles. It is like "casting Jimmy Dean in the Sidney Poitier role in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner".
Goooooooooooooooooood stuff.

Homophbia Wins Best Picture
AND:
Brokeback Mountain as slash fiction
Course, there are some film critics, who while appreciating the mainstream acceptance of a gay romance film, consider the film an "arted" up piece of slash-style fiction designed to appeal to straight suburban housefraus and gay men. (And surprise, surprise, the film was marketed to suburban women who went out to see the film in droves.)
In some ways, its just a Harlequin romance with two cute, masculine and uber-masculine men making out with each other.
