I suppose my main point is that some of us have actual, legitimate criticisms about some aspects of JKR's writing. This doesn't mean we think she's a bad writer or that we know better than her or that we expect things have to go "our way" for the books to be "good". But it gets frustrating when people in fandom automatically assume you're just a bit sore about a character or ship you don't like.

The big problem is that so many people HAVE criticized JKR's writing on the grounds that "she didn't cater to meeee" or "she wrote a character I don't like" that the legitimate criticism gets lumped in with it. Rather like the little boy who cried wolf, what I call the "literary criticism" gets met with an eyeroll, because so many people ARE sore about characters or ships. It's frustrating all around.

That goes double or triple for critics of Tonks and Ginny (and the male character who DOES seem to get more than his fair share of bashing, Ron). I admit to being so sick of the bashers that I leap to the defense of Tonks and Ginny as a reflex. It's a very charged atmosphere and the actual content of their characterizations tends to get lost because of it.

I suppose I've just been fortunate to not encounter a lot of those people. Then again, I'm not all that involved in fandom. I hear about these kinds of things a lot but haven't seen much of it. It probably has a lot to do with one's flist and which communities one frequents.

Yeah, actually, I think it does. I've been lurking in this fandom for a while, but because I stay on the H/D side of things, I've never really encountered any ship flame wars, and didn't really know they existed until now. Happens when you know for sure the relationship you ship won't happen...XD

Hee. Yeah, I guess that does allow us a little more freedom in terms of caring overly much about canon. (Except Sirius/Remus which IS canon, OMG!) ; ) I'm not really anti- any ship (though I don't really like Harry/Hermione), but I'm becoming glad I don't hang around too many Harry/Ginny, Hermione/Ron, Harry/Hermione communities because it seems that's where most of these problems come from. Then again, I could be totally wrong about that because, as I said, I don't know anything about those communities.
