Two moments in one today, and possibly my all-time favorite moments that I didn't get to see in the years they happened.
William Holden goes off script at the 1978 Oscars, where he was presenting with Barbara Stanwyck, who had starred with him in the film that was his big break, Golden Boy. He took that opportunity to pay tribute to the woman standing next to him, without whom, he said, he wouldn't be where he was that night. She was very visibly moved, as was most of the audience.
Three years later, Holden - a two-time Oscar winner - died. The year after that, Barbara Stanwyck, who had never won an Oscar, was given an Honorary Oscar for her tremendous career in films. After thanking all the directors and crew and stunt people, she gave one of the most tear-jerking, heartfelt tributes to a friend and colleague I've ever seen.
