Being distracted by Jane Austen last night, I completely forgot to watch the dialed-down coverage of the Golden Globes and didn't even look for the winners until this morning. Reactions...
Best Picture (Drama) - First of all, I'm a little baffled as to why people call this the "top" award of the evening. True, there will probably be more "Drama"s than "Musical/Comedy"s in the Best Picture category at the Oscars, but IMO Best Picture is Best Picture. Congrats to Atonement, in any case.
Best Picture (Musical/Comedy) - SWEENEY TODD, FTW! I'm rather surprised it overtook Juno.
Best Director - Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. I FINALLY get the chance to see this thing this weekend. It also won the Foreign Film award.
Best Actor (Drama) - Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood. No surprises there. I think he'll be duking it out with Johnny Depp for the Oscar. Well, duking out being probably closer to Day-Lewis knocking Depp out. Seeing this film this weekend, too.
Best Actress (Drama) - Julie Christie, Away From Her. Again, not surprising. Waiting for this to be available on Netflix, because it never came to my city, as I recall. Or maybe I had a chance to see it and didn't because I saw the name Sarah Polley. :P
Best Actor (Mus/Com) - JOHNNY DEPP, FTW! Making Sweeney one of three films (the other two being No Country and Diving Bell (ETA: and Atonement, making it four) that actually took away more than one award.
Best Actress (Mus/Com) - Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose. *sigh* Netflix, don't let me down.
Best Supp. Actor - Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men. YAY! Scary dudes rule!
Best Supp. Actress - Cate Blanchett, I'm Not There. Gosh, she's amazing in this.
Best Screenplay - No Country for Old Men. This is becoming my favorite for BP at the Oscars, actually.
I'm not sorry I missed the "show," though. It's not the same without the stars. And I agree with whoever said that Sweeney could have gotten a box office boost if the stars had been therefore and Johnny Depp had therefore been able to go up and accept his award.
