JKR said a bit about Book 7 during her appearance on the Richard and Judy show. Here's what I gleaned from TLC's report and
briel1e's post:
* She is still writing Book 7. (But judging by the bit below, she has apparently finished enough of it to be making changes to the last chapter already.)
* The final chapter has been rewritten since the original version was written in 1990 (I'm not sure if the 1990 draft is THE version she's talked about so many times.) One character who was supposed to die she has decided to let live, but two more characters were supposed to live she has decided to kill off. (EVAL)
* Her husband thought one of the deaths was an unhappy event.
* She is going to kill off MAIN CHARACTERS rather than supporting cast. Of course, her notion of main characters might be rather broad. (ETA: Apparently the comment was more along the lines of Voldemort not going for the "extras.")
I'm going to go on record (again) and say that I am reasonably confident that Harry will be alive at the end of the book.
