Hee! When I put my real name in it gives me Rick's "Of all the gin joints..." line from Casablanca.

In book news, I read the new Lemony Snicket book, The Penultimate Peril, over Thanksgiving. I loved the turn of events at the end. Most unfortunate, of course, but an excellent twist of circumstances and character choices. I'm now reading Casino Royale, the first of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. So far I can't imagine how they're going to make this work as a Bond movie. It's been very light on the action, but then again maybe that's standard for the books. I can't help noticing that, though I know nothing of cards and don't really have an interest in playing, Fleming has a way of describing the actions of a card game that is simply fascinating. Aaaaand just today I was browsing through the library and came across this. I could not resist the allure of the title. When I finish Bond, this is definitely next. :P It's looking like light reading for the holidays.

In holiday news, about an hour ago I was hit with the incredible force of the fact that it's Christmas time. Just like that. I was listening to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" with that awesome organ music, felt myself get a little choked up, and thought "Wow! It's the holidays!" *wants to wrap presents and make cider liek woah*

In fandom news, I feel a need to comment on the infamous Ron essay that popped up on Mugglenet the other day. I do suspect that perhaps it was posted to make someone look bad - or maybe even provoke a response from Rowling herself. (Dunno if it's true, but it's certainly possible.) But I don't see that the essay itself is that big a deal. Yeah, abusive!Ron is annoying and is definitely a perverse reading of the books - a phrase which here means "an interpretation that directly contradicts the preponderance of canon evidence". ;) But it's not against the law to have a subversive interpretation of something. I don't personally find it a worthwhile thing to do, but I recognize and respect the fact that some people do. I also recognize that, though the essay-writer seems to lean toward the H/Hr end of shipping, he most certainly does not represent most of the people who ship that pairing.

I will say, though, that as a predictive exercise, it is ... let's just say that it's not likely at all to be validated by future canon. If king is trying to predict the actual future of the actual books, I'm certain his (her?) essay will turn out to have been an unsuccessful endeavor. He's perfectly entitled to his opinion, though.
