Sadly, my wallet keeps me from being as informed about these nominees as I am for movie awards. But I did get to see Billy Elliot and West Side Story last week and I'm beyond pumped that Billy Elliot got a whopping FIFTEEN nominations, including one for all three of the young boys who play Billy (there's a fourth now, but that's been a recent addition). And it's wonderful to see the rest of the main cast up for awards as well.
I'm deeply saddened not to see Equus represented in any but two technical categories. I thought it was a smashing production myself, but I'd heard murmurings from critics who felt the play itself did not hold up thirty-some-odd years after the original production.
The award ceremony will air on CBS on June 7. I always love that show, because they're so unembarrassed to express their love for musical numbers. :P
