Okay, so I was all ready to hate on Twilight this weekend and grumble while everyone else flocked to see it. I'm still not going to pay to see it (*crosses arms firmly*), but Harry Knowles was dragged to see it by his wife (who is a fan), and his review makes me want to give it a shot. Now, I don't agree with his opinions all the time, especially about movie romance (for example, I think he's borderline Delusional about the shipping in Spider-Man). But I find his sensibilities to be often remarkably similar to my own, so it interested me that he had a positive reaction to the Twilight movie.

And I guess it's evil of me, but I probably took the most satisfaction in his main criticism of the film. After a screening in Austin last night, there was a Q&A with director Catherine Hardwicke that was conducted by Austin filmmaking icon Richard Linklater. Hardwicke was asked about how she made the choices in what to cut and what to leave in, and she said that she didn't want to make the film just "talking heads." To which Linklater, director of two of the greatest romantic movies of all time, which also happen to be big "talking head" movies (Before Sunrise and Before Sunset), kind of smirked. Now, from what I've seen, the talking that the characters do in the books is not that impressive. But that's where you tweak it in the adaptation process. You take the sentiment and make it more bearable, more meaningful, more camera friendly.

So mentally and emotionally, I'm going to try and give this flick a shot, just as a movie and not as a version of the books. Because as much as I hate what I've seen of the books, I do love me a good movie love story.

Hehe. Thanks, but I need to see it on the big screen if I can. I'd still like to be able to criticize it for not being a "large" enough story for a movie. :P
