connielane at 09:46pm on 19/04/2008Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the latest in what seems to be an interminable string of "macho chick flicks" coming out of the Judd Apatow stable. It may seem like these crude-yet-lovable guys have a monopoly on romantic comedies right now, but these guys just know how do it right. Jason Segel is no exception.

Okay, so I could have done with fewer views of Segel's peen, but like the other recent manly rom-coms such as Superbad and Knocked Up, this movie feels incredibly (sometimes painfully) real. And is pant-peeingly funny. One thing that jumped out at me about this film is that Segel seems to love every single character he writes. There are no "bad guys" - not even the creepy rock star guy that stole Segel's girlfriend (he actually has some of the funniest lines in the movie and may, in fact, be my favorite character).
I also thought that Sarah's and Peter's flashbacks were used very well, giving us a good glimpse at what they were like as a couple in the first place. And major points for the hilarious but not mocking treatment of the wait-until-we're-married-to-have-sex honeymooning couple.
But dudes - the best part? Segel's character is a composer and he's working on a musical about Dracula. With PUPPETS. Top that!
It's as crude as you probably think it is, but it has a lot of heart. And you get to hear "Nothing Compares 2 U" in Hawaiian during the credits. :)
