Everyone's been doing this meme, and I've hesitated. I did a very similar one a couple of years ago, and in my effort not to make mine too difficult, I think I made them too easy. So I'm going to diverge from the rules a bit and make this more about reveling in some of my favorite moments in screenwriting than actually quizzing people.
So here's my version:
- Pick 15 of your favorite movies.
- Find a quote from each movie, either from IMDB or somewhere else.
- Post them here for everyone to guess.
- Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie.
- FEEL FREE TO GOOGLE or use the IMDB search function if you're stumped. Most of these (the quotes, not the movies) are somewhat obscure. Some of them are not from IMDB, though, so you'll have to use your Google-Fu skillz.
Also, most of these are fairly long, but they're such great moments I hate to cut them down. I know that all of you love to read, though, so I don't feel guilty about TL;DR-ing you at all.
1.Excuse me, gentlemen? You officers and gentlemen – listen here now – now, there’s things we need to do for her. I know that y’all brought her this far, and that her folks would thank you if they could for your kindness and your sensitivity, but now please just … go on now and let us take care of her. … Go on, now. Silence of the Lambs, guessed by
pennylane_4.
2.What am I supposed to do -- am I supposed to sit home knitting and purling, while you slink back like some penitent drunk?! I’m your wife, damn it! And if you can’t work up a winter passion for me, the least I require is respect and allegiance! Network, guessed by
dramaprincess87.
3.You and your whole rotten class. […] You're on your way out, the lot of you, and good riddance! The Philadelphia Story, guessed by
queenriley.
4.If I had two lives ... with one, I'd have her stay at my place. With the other, I'd kick her out. Then I could compare and see which was best. But we only live once. Life's so light … like an outline we can't ever … fill in or correct … make any better. It’s frightening. The Unbearable Lightness of Being, guessed by
angua9 and her powers of deduction. :)
5.Now, a staple of the superhero mythology is, there's the superhero and there's the alter ego. Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man is actually Peter Parker. When that character wakes up in the morning, he's Peter Parker. He has to put on a costume to become Spider-Man. And it is in that characteristic Superman stands alone. Superman didn't become Superman. Superman was born Superman. When Superman wakes up in the morning, he's Superman. His alter ego is Clark Kent. His outfit with the big red "S", that's the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes. What Kent wears - the glasses, the business suit - that's the costume. That's the costume Superman wears to blend in with us. Clark Kent is how Superman views us. And what are the characteristics of Clark Kent. He's weak... he's unsure of himself... he's a coward. Clark Kent is Superman's critique on the whole human race. Kill Bill, vol. 2, guessed by
persephone_kore.
6.That the last time you ever make me look bad in front of those kids, you hear me? I make $31,000 a year and I have a home and I'm not about to throw it all away on some punk like you. But someday when you're outta here and you've forgotten all about this place and they've forgotten all about you, and you're wrapped up in your own pathetic life, I'm gonna be there. That's right. And I'm gonna kick the living s*** out of you. I'm gonna knock your d*** in the dirt. The Breakfast Club, guessed by
jenadamson
7.You know, at one time, I used to break into pet shops to liberate the canaries. But I decided that was an idea way before its time. Zoos are full, prisons are overflowing... oh my, how the world still dearly loves a cage. Harold and Maude, guessed by
piperx.
8.As you know, the concept of the suction pump is centuries old. Really that's all this is except that instead of sucking water, I'm sucking life. I've just sucked one year of your life away. I might one day go as high as five, but I really don't know what that would do to you. So, let's just start with what we have. What did this do to you? Tell me. And remember, this is for posterity so be honest. How do you feel? The Princess Bride, guessed by
pennylane_4.
9.The Master of the Revels despises us all for vagrants and peddlers of bombast. But my father, James Burbage, had the first license to make a company of players from Her Majesty, and he drew from poets the literature of the age. We must show them that we are men of parts. Will Shakespeare has a play. I have a theatre. The Curtain is yours. Shakespeare in Love, guessed by
sandrastarck.
10.I got everything I need right here with me. I got air in my lungs, a few blank sheets of paper. I mean, I love waking up in the morning not knowing what's gonna happen or, who I'm gonna meet, where I'm gonna wind up. Just the other night I was sleeping under a bridge and now here I am on the grandest ship in the world having champagne with you fine people. I figure life's a gift and I don't intend on wasting it. You don't know what hand you're gonna get dealt next. You learn to take life as it comes at you... to make each day count. Titanic, guessed by
pennylane_4.
11.Especially important is the warning to avoid conversations with the demon. We may ask what is relevant but anything beyond that is dangerous. He is a liar. The demon is a liar. He will lie to confuse us. But he will also mix lies with the truth to attack us. The attack is psychological, Damien, and powerful. So don't listen to him. Remember that - do not listen. The Exorcist, guessed by
divinemum.
12.The crime you see now, it's hard to even take its measure. It's not that I'm afraid of it. I always knew you had to be willing to die to even do this job - not to be glorious. But I don't want to push my chips forward and go out and meet something I don't understand. You can say it's my job to fight it, but I don't know what it is anymore. More than that, I don't want to know. A man would have to put his soul at hazard. He would have to say, "O.K., I'll be part of this world." No Country for Old Men, guessed by
prettyannamoon.
13.You see sir a man infatuate with love. Her ardent and eager slave. So fetch the pomade and pumice stone and lend me a more seductive tone a sprinkling perhaps of French cologne but first sir I think... a shave. Sweeney Todd, guessed by
persephone_kore.
14.It's like in the great stories, […]. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, […], I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something. LOTR: The Two Towers, guessed by
pennylane_4.
15.It was one of those days when it's a minute away from snowing and there's this electricity in the air, you can almost hear it. And this bag was, like, dancing with me. Like a little kid begging me to play with it. For fifteen minutes. And that's the day I knew there was this entire life behind things, and... this incredibly benevolent force, that wanted me to know there was no reason to be afraid, ever. Video's a poor excuse, I know. But it helps me remember... and I need to remember... Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it, like my heart's going to cave in. American Beauty, guessed by
jenadamson

8. The Princess Bride
9. Shakespeare in Love?
13. Sweeney Todd
14. The Return of the King
Edit: #9 was actually a wild guess, but made without seeing the previous comment. #5 was Google. I remembered a critique of that particular quote, but not where it had been attributed to.
