I suppose it's a travesty that I'm doing a Doris Day movie that doesn't also star Rock Hudson, but what the hey. I've always found this movie charming, even if it's a bit dated.

That Touch of Mink

Doris Day is career girl Cathy Timberlake, and Cary Grant is zillionaire Philip Shayne. Their paths cross when Philip splashes Cathy as his car hits a mud puddle. He tries to make it up to her, but she's not very receptive. She eventally warms to him, however, and he starts to wine and dine her, eventually flying her out to his favorite spot in Bermuda for a romantic getaway. The problem is that she is not really the kind of girl who has a romantic getaway with a man who's not her husband.

There's a whole sequence in the hotel where Cathy is obsessed that everyone knows that she's not married to the man she's sharing a hotel room with. Philip doesn't get very far with Cathy, however, before she's holed up in the bedroom with a rash. A rash the doctor reveals is more often seen in new brides. So the romantic getaway didn't work out that well. But Cathy is determined to show Philip that she's a sophisticated woman. She arranges to go with him to Brazil again, but this time she gets there ahead of him and downs a bottle of booze to relax - no rash, but of course she's in no condition to be wooed.

Grant and Day have an interesting chemistry, but Day seems older to me than the movie wants me to think she is. There are some great supporting players in this, most notably Audrey "one of these days, Alice" Meadows, as Cathy's older and wiser roommate. Gig Young is also quite a bit of fun as Philip's assistant.

Great Moments in Dialogue:
Everett: Oh! Well, Miss Timberlake, back again for a little of the taxpayers' money, hmm? So did you work last week?
Cathy: No.
Everett: Are you available for work?
Cathy: Yes.
Everett: Did you turn down any jobs?
Cathy: No.
Everett: Are you busy tonight?
Cathy: Yes.
Everett: If, in our opinion, the applicant hasn't exercised proper diligence in seeking employment, we can withhold payment of checks... Perhaps tomorrow night? There's a wonderful little diner round the corner from where I live and after dinner we could, uh, well... perhaps...
Cathy: Go up to your apartment?
Everett: Well, I, uh...
Cathy: If you want me to go up to your apartment, come out and ask. That way I can think about it and make a decision.
Everett: Would you like to stop off at my place?
Cathy: May I have my check?
Everett: Oh. Of course. Well?
Cathy: I would enjoy going out with you, Mr Beasley... if I didn't find you so personally distasteful. You're a sneaky, crude, offensive man. That's just how I feel. I'm sure there are hundreds of girls who admire those qualities.

"Awwww!" Moment: What happens to Philip at the end. I'll leave it at that. :-)
