Oh, goody. I get to to pour tea again today. I love putting my college degree to work. Of course, I put it to enough work last night, writing someone else's paper on Oedipus Rex and Death of a Salesman.

Daily Dose of Debate Discontent:
I haven't looked closely at it this morning, but I can see that - in keeping with the "oldies but goodies" theme of the past week - the idea of Harry's emotional shutdowns has been brought back. I find it very convenient that, when faced with Harry's inexplicable non-reactions to things they'd rather (for their ship) he react to (like the kiss on the cheek), they say instead that he is just shutting down emotionally, and that this is hardly surprising given his background of being abused. I always thought that if something significant happened, and we saw someone else's reaction (like Ron's) instead of Harry's, that that other person's reactions were more important at the time.

*shrugs*

Well, before I get to work, I thought I'd announce that, though it's hardly a surprise, it has been declared that I am stuck in the 1980s.

Well, even if he is shutting down emotionally quite frankly it establishes an unhealthy relationship dynamic. But, well, when confronted with Cho emotion he feels at the very least uncomfortable. Ginny manages to startle him and make him feel better, and Luna has an instant of comfort. Why these reactions to girls other than Hermione and a shut down with Hermione? Or is it just BS. Then again, the kiss is an instance when numbness can be argued for the entire chapter. Anything in OoTP as an emotional shutdown is highly unlikely as Harry's emotions were everywhere.

The whole 'emotional shutdown' argument makes R/Hr impossible. If Harry had reacted positively to Hermione's kiss, H/Hers would jump on it as evidence - and rightly so. Harry's Hermione's friend, he wouldn't react negatively to it. And even if we did get something like 'ew! gross!', I wouldn't be surprised if H/Hers to that as canon evidence, as well. The same is true for Hermione's hugs - if he was happy to hug Hermione, it's H/Hr shippiness. He shouldn't be negative toward Hermione's hugs - it's a hug from a good friend, there's nothing to be embarrased about (*cough*nonhughandshake*cough*). It's impossible for R/Hr to happen.

Btw, I loved your "Flight of Love" comment on the DT.
