I think I've changed my position on Book 7 and the OotP movie being released fairly close together, even as close as a week apart. As someone who is going to try and remain spoiler-free (with a couple of notable exceptions) for Book 7, I think it would be great if we had movie news/spoilers to distract us from book spoilers. Especially in the last weeks, when we'll no doubt be swimming in movie stills, video clips, and cast appearances. I mean, yeah, I'll probably be less excited about that stuff than normal, but I'd rather have that distraction than not, I think.
So bring on the Summer of Harry, I say!

(Though I think the movie might come out first? Not sure, do we have an actual release date for Book Seven? *is painfully out of the loop with HP news*)

I know I should just go and backread but it's late (sorry). Was your position that you didn't want them released too close to each other (just so one wouldn't take away anything from the other) OR was it that you didn't think the release dates would be a week apart?
I am of the second mindset at the moment and was actually upset (annoyed) that the release date of OotP was announced to be around the 13th (semi-OT but hellooo? WTH with France and some other countries, no offense to those living there, getting the movie before the U.S. (where the WB is based) or the U.K.?)
I really had my heart set on B7 being released on 07/07/07!!! :( I mean, it's just TOO good a date to pass up and it falls on a Saturday no less! I think it's definitely feasible for Jo to be finished and to have the book ready by that date but as soon as I heard the movie news, all hopes of that release date were dashed.
(As far as the two being released close to the same date, I have no problem with that but I do think some sales of one or the other may be slightly affected at the start if that were to happen). Maybe not though.

I still think that if Scholastic/Bloomsbury announce a summer date (like, for example, 07/07/07), WB might at least think about pushing the date back, even if it's just until later in the summer.
But the selfish side of me wouldn't mind them coming out a week apart, especially when I think about how hard it's going to be to stay away from Book 7 spoilers. :P

Yes, I can see this. The movie news, pics, clips, etc. would be a good distraction in the time period leading up to the release of both BUT when push comes to shove - if the movie comes out the following week, I don't think my excitement level will be as high as if the releases were spread out. Though, it would extend the general HP excitement/geekiness level at the time. I also wanted to possibly be somewhere for a B7 get-together too. I guess that *could* be a good thing then, because then everyone could go see the movie together (but I wouldn't want to miss the movie due to traveling or being somewhere the movie isn't showing yet).
Lol - I just realized how I keep wavering in my opinion of whether it would be a good thing or not. Ultimately though, I think what you said would make more sense too:

I also want to stay (book) spoiler-free so if the movie came out around the same time, I would probably miss movie stuff since I'd be avoiding so many internet things for fear of reading a book spoiler. Maybe that would be a good thing since I felt, watching GoF in the theater, that I had seen 3/4 of the movie anyway from online and TV clips and specials.
