I've been watching Network again and was struck by something that's never caught my attention before. Faye Dunaway's character is meeting with her programming staff and telling them that, according to her research, the American people want someone to articulate their rage for them. She wants angry, anti-establishment, counterculture shows. And her first request is that her team develop a show that revolves around the actions of a terrorist group. One of the subplots of the movie focuses on the development of this show - they open each episode with authentic footage of a terrorist act and have their writers come up with a "backstory" to go behind it.

This is, naturally, designed to be somewhat less than realistic (though not much, actually), as part of the sort of bleak humor of the film. But I couldn't help thinking how differently people would see that now. And I find myself growing ever more anxious and impatient to see how V For Vendetta is received when it comes out on March 17 (yes, that was a shameless plug, and I'll probably do several more over the next few weeks :P).
