Don't know how many of you have already seen this, but here is the trailer for Chris Columbus' screen adaptation of RENT.

I don't know what to think about it yet. I'm not that fond of Rosario Dawson, and it's hard to see someone besides Daphne Rubin-Vega doing Mimi with Adam Pascal's Roger. I'm also not sure it was a good idea to make it a movie at all, as part of what makes RENT the Musical so unique is the sort of primitive visual representations. The cast seems to include some great new voices, though. And obviously the original cast members were made for their parts. Jesse L. Martin ROX. And I think my crush on Adam Pascal has been rekindled.

Eh. We'll see, I guess. Just thought some of you would be interested. :)

You'd think musicals would come out more often. They have an appeal all their own.

Stop raining on my excitement! :P I've enjoyed the original cast recording for years, but have never had a chance to see the play, so I am totally psyched about the movie. I thought the trailer looked great.

And on that note, I will add that I think making a movie of it probably does make the story more accessible to those of us living on a Bohemian income in general. (I know they do the last minute cheap tickets that [livejournal.com profile] chicagoamy has mentioned, but that doesn't help those of us not living near NYC).

(Also, while I love most of the original cast--especially Adam Pascal--I was never that crazy about Rubin-Vega, so admit I'm not sad to see her go.)

I also only know her from the cast recording, and wasn't that fond of her voice. Not sure Dawson will be better, but then again, I'd have laughed at the idea of Catherine Zeta-Jones in any musical before I saw Chicago.

Yeah, and then there's the fact that she definitely didn't age that well. :p That's probably my main quibble with the casting, they're all older than the parts are supposed to be and they look it, but I still think that this movie looks amazing and that it's due to the original cast members being in it. They kept it true. As for Rosario, she looks very Mimi-ish but I haven't heard her sing yet so will reserve judgement. :-)

BTW, you (both Joie and Pam) might be interested in [livejournal.com profile] rent_the_movie, a community for the movie!

I've never seen the play, but loved the soundtrack from the original cast. And when I found out that Jesse L. Martin and Taye Diggs were both in the original cast... *drools* (Tidbit: They were also both on Ally McBeal... Jesse L. Martin as Ally's boyfriend and Taye Diggs as a guy that Ling was dating.) Glad to see they're both in the movie. *marks it down on list of things to see*
