I'm planning some movie-themed food for consumption during tonight's Oscars -- drumsticks for Whiplash, chips/queso for Boyhood, and a Crumbs cupcake for Grand Budapest Hotel. I don't often do a full list of predictions, but here goes. These guesses are highly influenced by Oscar blogs I follow, namely In Contention, and they reflect likely outcomes, not my own personal preferences. After years of following the Oscars, I've learned to just let go of my personal feelings and enjoy the show. Mostly. :P

SHORT FILM (ANIMATED) - Feast (which preceded Animated Feature nominee Big Hero 6)
SHORT FILM (DOCUMENTARY) - Joanna
SHORT FILM (LIVE ACTION) - No idea.  Even the prognosticators are all over the place.  Apparently Boogaloo and Graham (which sounds like an awesome Breakin'/Hannibal crossover fic) is the "safe" choice, whatever that means.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM - Ida (or Wild Tales)
DOCUMENTARY FEATURE - CITIZENFOUR (all caps part of title, not mine)
ANIMATED FEATURE - How to Train Your Dragon 2 (which I still haven’t seen, which is part of why I’m hoping Big Hero 6 pulls through)
VISUAL EFFECTS - Interstellar (or Dawn of the Planet of the Apes)
SOUND MIXING - Whiplash (or possibly Birdman)
SOUND EDITING - American Sniper (always bet on war films in this category)
PRODUCTION DESIGN - The Grand Budapest Hotel
ORIGINAL SONG - “Glory” from Selma (sadly, probably the only thing it will win)
ORIGINAL SCORE - The Theory of Everything
MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING - This is kind of a wild card category and there’s no Rick Baker, so … I’m thinking Grand Budapest Hotel, though I wouldn’t be surprised at any of the three winning, honestly. (I’ll be kind of ticked if Foxcatcher wins, though, as the achievement is pretty much just Steve Carrell’s nose.)
EDITING - Either Whiplash or Boyhood. Whiplash is a truly brilliant piece of editing, but people might want to reward Boyhood for the sheer feat of cutting twelve years of film together.
COSTUME DESIGN - Probably Grand Budapest Hotel again, though Into the Woods is certainly a possibility. (If I were voting, I’d go for Inherent Vice myself.)
CINEMATOGRAPHY - Probably Birdman.
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY - The Grand Budapest Hotel (though I’d LOVE to see Nightcrawler get it, as this is its only shot at an award)
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY - The Imitation Game (probably the only one it will get), though I think Inherent Vice is more of an achievement.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS - Patricia Arquette
SUPPORTING ACTOR - J.K Simmons
ACTRESS - Julianne Moore
ACTOR - Eddie Redmayne or Michael Keaton. I truly have no idea which, though I’d like seeing Keaton win. Redmayne has degree of difficulty on his side, but Keaton has a body of work and has been extremely likable on the awards circuit. (So help me, if Cooper gets it I will flip tables. Of his three consecutive nominated performances, this is easily his least impressive. Though kudos for trying to make that baby look real.)
DIRECTOR - Either Innaritu or Linklater. I couldn’t possibly say which. Like with Editing, people may want to reward the feat of Boyhood. I’m leaning ever-so-slightly toward Innaritu because of his DGA win.
PICTURE - Birdman. *sigh* I’m not a huge fan of this movie and I find it pretty firmly up its own ass. I don’t hate it like I hated Inarritu’s last big contender, Babel (ugh, screw that movie), but it reminds me of the problems I had with that movie. That said, Michael Keaton goes a long way to making Birdman tolerable. I’ve made my peace with it winning. Also with Boyhood, which is possible but doesn’t have the momentum at this point (and is another movie people loved and I just …. didn’t.) Just please not American Sniper, y’all. I can’t deal with that.

Unless some unforeseen technical snafu happens (like with the Golden Globes), I'll be livetweeting tonight (@pknail).

ETA: I just figured out you can't do that thing LJ used to let you do where you could pick a mood pic and write your own mood on it.  Now if you want to make up your own mood that's not on the list (say, "anticipatory"), you can't put a pic with it. :(
Mood:: 'good' good
