This is the point where I usually give up in hopelessness from being so far behind, but I WON'T DO IT. Yes, Sunday was the Khan anniversary and was when I'd planned to watch that movie - having, in theory, watched all of the Original Series and the first film. But I'm still plugging away at Season 1.
19/18 - ARENA
- I love how when Bones calls Spock "inhuman," Spock takes it as a compliment, and when Spock calls Bones a "sensualist," Bones takes *that* as a compliment.
- Good action this episode on the planet. I mean, for Star Trek, that is.
- Warp Factor SEVEN?!?!?! Sorry, that dramatic moment cracked me up.
- WARP FACTOR EIGHT??? KIRK, ARE YOU MAD?!
- This is like when mom locks you and your brother in a room and tells you to fight until one of you is dead.
- Cute dress on the alien!
- Cruel (and kind of hilarious) of the Metrons to force the Enterprise crew to watch the struggle.
- Chemistry class with Kirk!
- SPARKLY METRON!
20/27 - THE ALTERNATIVE FACTOR
- I liked this one a lot, actually. Lots of 2001-y effects. The alternate universe and mentions of anti-matter obviously rang the 2009 movie bells.
- This may have been the first time in the watching of this show that I did an "oh noes" gasp, when the "blink" happens on the planet that first time after we know what it is. I immediately felt really silly, but good job, show!
- Perhaps one reason I enjoyed this more than most episodes is the extended scene with Kirk and Spock figuring out the Lazarus/anti-Lazarus thing. This is why they're the stars of the show.
21/19 - TOMORROW IS YESTERDAY
- Time travel, what what!
- Okay, kind of dumb time travel, but time travel nonetheless. I thought the method of getting back to their own time and still returning the two 60s guys to their own time was especially wonky.
- I did, however, enjoy the conundrum of keeping the guest aboard vs. returning him with the knowledge he now has. You see a lot of exploration of the danger of people knowing their own futures, but it was interesting to see that it was still dangerous for the guy to have seen the Enterprise and futuristic culture, even though he didn't understand it and wouldn't be around for it.
22/21 - THE RETURN OF THE ARCHONS
- It's the wild, wild west! Or, errr, the extremely calm and peaceful west.
- This one was kind of forgettable. In that a mere twenty minutes after it was over I couldn't think of anything to write about it that didn't involve that cast in those costumes.
- The whole idea of "Festival" was just so weird, and then it felt like they just completely dropped it in the second half. What was the point of that, exactly?
23/23 - A TASTE OF ARMAGEDDON
- Even though I thought the idea was kind of ridiculous, I loved this episode.
- Oh, Bones and Spock and your bickering.
- Well, that's Barbara Babcock!
- So what prevents both sides from just pretending to execute their "war casualties"?
- I totally had a THEY LIVE moment when the guy invites Kirk to have a drink and he says "I didn't come here to drink." He came here to chew bubblegum and kick ass ... and he's all out of bubblegum!
- And then I had a WEST WING moment when Uhura said of the peace negotiations that the outlook was hopeful. ("All parties are optimistic." "Are any of the parties optimistic?" "No.")
24/22 - SPACE SEED
- So there was another world war in the 1990s, eh?
- It's weird to think this was airing three years before the moon landing.
- Heh. Kirk and Spock saying "penal." Heheheh.
- I was seriously getting scared when Khan eyed the medical tools in the case. Run, Bones! He's got torture weapons!
- Oh no, stay where you are, Bones, BECAUSE YOU ARE A BADASS!
- Khan, make sure her hair is perfect.
- Ooooh, Khan likes it when you say 'please.' (*shudder*)
- Is Khan doing tai chi?
- Ooooh, Khan has his own nerve pinch move thingy!
- I was compelled to read the entire summary of this episode in my head as Ricardo Montalban. I regret nothing.
- I love the little Starfleet dress uniforms they roll out for court and special occasions.
- Kirk, I think you're going to live to regret this act of mercy.
- This episode ROXED! (Errr, is it okay to still spell it that way? :P)
Well, as I was so behind I was going to stop here and watch the movies. I'd wait and do them later, but the 1982 movies I'd scheduled to watch are piling up and I refuse to scrap the project. Don't ask me why this is so important, but it is. But now I see that "Errand of Mercy" is the first appearance of the Klingons, and I can't miss THAT, can I?! *sigh* I *will* wait until after the movies to do the last two of S1. I mean, "City on the Edge of Forever" is practically a stand-alone. Well, most of them are pretty stand-alone, if you ask me, but that one's ... special, isn't it. :-)
