I'm probably going to do this for all the Season 2 eps, so I wanted to try and get thoughts up for each of the S1 episodes as well (even though they're no longer new to me). I love Patton Oswalt's and Simon Pegg's tweets about this show! Oswalt's "I want someone to slap the curls outta [O'Brien's] bangs" has been cracking me up for days.
Side note, if you are a fan of this show and have never seen the film Gosford Park, I would highly recommend watching not just the film but the DVD commentary by Julian Fellowes as well. I'd heard it before several years ago, but having seen this show gives it an interesting new context.
- I love how they tease the mystery of what's in the telegrams and newspaper that has upset everyone. There was a time, over a decade ago now and in the months leading up to the release of James Cameron's film, that I was a bit obsessed with the Titanic sinking. I hate to call it a "fandom," but it *was* really the first thing I talked a great deal about with other people online. Robert's dialogue with Carson about the "poor devils below decks" kills me. I still get a bit emotional about all that - such a tragedy.
- Daisy is almost our POV character there in the beginning, and she's so tiny that it makes the size and bustle of everything around her seem that much bigger.
- LOL the first image of Mrs. Hughes with the keys, like a gaoler. "Oh heavens, girl - you're building a fire, not inventing it." You also really get the impression from the get-go of how servants aren't supposed to be seen, especially the kitchen servants. There's a scene in Gosford Park where the little maid is lighting Henry Denton's fire in the morning and remarks that she's supposed to have had it done before he wakes up and it's basically a mistake not to have better anticipated him and been out before then.
- WAY TO STARE AT BATES AND HIS BAD LEG, EVERYONE! So much for the English and their genteel subtlety. (LOL I still want to spell it "subtlelty.") I also love that Carson tries to prepare him for the overwhelmingness of meeting his lordship when Bates had known him for years.
- I suppose Mary gained her share of fandom enemies with her "Ugh, do I have to into Full Fiance Morning?!" God, I love her, though. Favorite character, for srs. Of course, Cora didn't make the best first impression on me either. Really didn't like her prattling on about the Important Titanic Passengers and her helping along the persecution of Bates.
- Maggie Smith is more force-to-be-reckoned-with than snarky at this point, though her line about the electric lights is amusing.
- "Nothing makes you hungrier or more tired than grief." So true, Mrs. Patmore. And she's right about it being mainly a time-passer. Gotta do something.
- I love that they cover such a long period of time in such a short season, but sometimes it's a little awkward/confusing when they do a time jump (e.g., Robert greeting Bates on his first day and then BOOM it's the day of the memorial).
- "They're not our family." "Well, they're all the family I've got." *hugs Carson*
- It's kind of amazing (yet actually not) how the rumors about Bates's unfitness spread throughout the house, downstairs and up. And I declare, O'Brien's position as Head Bitch Not-In-Charge (and I don't mean that in an admiring way) was fixed from the moment she kicked Bates to the ground in front of the Duke. Speaking of the Duke...
- CHARLIE COX!!!!! And his awesomely bad combover! I wish there were a way for him to come back, though I fear for what that might mean for the story and the characters. :P
- "I always apologize when I'm in the wrong. Force of habit." And that's when Mary won me over.
- "As it is, my lord, we may have to have ... a maid in the dining room." LMAO TEH HORROR! I love Carson. He'd be my favorite downstairs person if not for sweet William.
- "One swallow doesn't make a summer"? Did I hear that right, or did my ears give me a super-dirty version of something much more innocent? That's not a rhetorical question. Please answer, so I can sleep at night.
- Hello, gorgeous! By which I of course mean the fleeting glimpse of the handsome Matthew Crawley. Who cares if he's "just" an upper middle class lawyer? He's a total dish!
