Overall, I was kind of meh about tonight's episode. It was beautifully shot, as always, and especially so given the location shooting in Manhattan. But it kind of fizzled out at the end (though there were some pleasant surprises).
I liked the upbeat original song New Directions did, but the "I Love New York/New York, New York" mashup was kind of painful (mostly because I can't stand that Madonna song). Curses on them for doing "For Good" from Wicked, the song that NEVER fails to make me bawl my eyes out. Thank goodness they didn't do the "whatever way our stories end" verse. That is a HUGE HP fandom touchstone song for me.
I had selfish reasons for being invested in this episode as one of the projects I'm working on has some elements that could have been scarily similar to the "kids exploring the city" portions of the episode. I think I'm safe, though.
Something I had a problem with, though it's not exactly anyone's fault. Obviously, the glee kids wanted to win Nationals and genuinely thought they had a shot (my high school marching band and winter guard always felt the same way), but 12th place in the country is pretty damn good for a first ever try at that level of competition, especially since Finn supposedly screwed up by kissing Rachel. I don't really think that would have counted against them, since some performing groups actually script moments like that into a show. But there I go trying to inject reality into this cartoon of a television program. :P
Loved Patti Lupone's cameo ("He's cute!") and that they didn't make her some "above it all" diva. I know it's useless to get my hopes up about plots and especially pairings in this show, but I wish they'd address the false choice Rachel has set up for herself between love and ambition. Any performer who is also a decent human being will tell you that you *HAVE* to have some kind of life off-stage/camera. It's how you keep from getting too self-involved (and too disappointed when doors slam in your face), and if anyone needs that kind of grounding it's Rachel Berry. And that about wraps up this week's "If I Were Writing This Show."
