Have plowed through Book One, and ... was not in love with most of it (with a couple of exceptions), but it finishes quite strong. Katara gets on my nerves, like, a lot. I don't know if it's the voice actor or the general goodie-two-shoes-ness or a combination of the two. The voice acting for Aang was a bit grating most of the time as well, but he got better.

The animation is, of course, breathtaking, and I love how they utilize different visual styles for things like the Spirit World and other ... states of being, I guess. Also, A+++++ on the moral ambiguity of having the kids do questionable things like Katara stealing the waterbending scroll and Aang lying like a lying liar who lies to get the two tribes to get along in "The Great Divide." Oh, and some of the mythology is hella creepy. The spirit that steals your face? NO THANK YOU BYE.

I know I shouldn't feel the need to map my feelings about this story onto HP parallels, but it feels wrong somehow to be more interested in Zuko's story than Aang's and Katara's and Sokka's. That is my feeling at the moment, though. He's just so ... TRAGIC. And I'm pretty sure my favorite character is Iroh. His butt-kicking at the end of Book One reminded me of Dumbles vs. Voldie in OOTP. EPIC.

And though I haven't gotten to the episode with the actual quote, it makes me smile to know what [livejournal.com profile] peachespig's journal title means. :) Poor Sokka.
