It's been fascinating catching up on this series as an outsider. I can only dimly imagine what it must have been like to experience the end of "Through the Looking Glass" at the time it first aired. And it makes me sad to think of all the fans who had already given up on the show at this point and didn't get to see it get its mojo back, particularly in this whopper of a season finale.
There are a ton of great moments in this episode, which centers around the survivors' plot to get to the radio tower and switch off Rousseau's distress call, while Charlie hopefully shuts off the interfering signal from the Looking Glass station so that they can contact the freighter. Complicating matters is that the Others have a plan of their own - to kidnap the pregnant women from the camp. Luckily, Juliet has warned them, and the unlikely trio of Sayid, Jin, and Bernard stay behind to unload some whup-ass. Things go awry, and before all is said and done Sayid has actually killed someone with his ANKLES.
And then there's the unbelievably sad death of a major character, which is getting a post of its own later and that's all I'm saying about that before I start crying. :P
We get a breather after that, with Jack and the other survivors getting to the radio tower and finally getting a signal to the freighter. They are slightly impeded by Locke throwing a knife in Naomi's back, but they manage to make contact, and it looks like they'll actually be getting off the island. Hurray!
And then there's another flashback, one of several this episode where we see a severely bummed and bearded Jack. He calls someone and they arrange to meet. Only ... hold on. Is that KATE?! But ... they didn't know each other before the crash. This isn't a flashback, it's a flashFORWARD. Lost, you sly thing you.
Hell of a twist, and hell of a cliffhanger - for nine friggin' months until Season 4. I'm so glad I didn't have to go through that. :P
One more thing, possibly silly. This episode aired on May 23, 2007. That's three years to the day before the series finale will air. They probably have excellent programming reasons for airing it on a Sunday, but as I look at my calendar for May 23, I notice that 23 is one of the Numbers. Namely, Jack's number. Hmmm... *twirls imaginary beard thoughtfully*
