I had low expectations for this week, figuring that there was bound to be a comedown from the backstory-licious Richard episode last week. So "The Package" was a very pleasant surprise. Fans have been complaining about the glacial pace with which "answers" are being doled out, but surely there can be no doubt after last night that the episodes we've gotten thus far have been extremely careful setup for what's still coming. It's like a roller coaster, where the longest portion of the ride is the slow climb to the top before the train lets go and gravity takes over. And this was never more evident than in the final shot of last night's episode.

And before I get with the spoilers, can I join the throng and say how much I HATED that stupid "V" countdown clock that hovered in the corner for the entire show?! Very distracting. Okay, here we go.

- It took a bit for me to warm up to Sun and Jin in the earilest episodes of Season 1, but they really have become THE love story of the show. I knew from piecing together info from cast interviews that, despite the episode being about them, Jin and Sun would not be reunited in the island timeline. So I was extremely gratified to see them together in the non-crash reality. And with a great little twist - this time, Jin's not working for Mr. Paik in a Jacob-(heh)-style bargain to earn the right to marry Sun. He's already working for him, and Sun is totally off-limits, leading Sun and Jin to explore their attraction to each other in a secret affair.

- Meanwhile, in the island timeline, Mocke is trying to get all the candidates together to get them off the island via the Ajira plane. Or so he says. At the end of last week, MIB vowed that he would kill Jacob and anyone who takes his place. Perhaps he's trying to get all the candidates off the island before one of them moves from candidate to Jacob-elect and he's forced to kill them. Or perhaps he intends to kill them all.

- Widmore showing Jin pictures of the daughter he's never met KILLED me.

- Speaking of Widmore, nice confrontation with Mocke. I still don't think his allegiances are entirely clear, but it does seem like he's mostly with the good guys and that his conflict with Ben was personal rather than ideological.

- Back in the non-crash timeline, we see the other POV of the scene from Sayid's episode, where he encounters Jin in the walk-in refrigerator. And way to be a jerk, Sayid, just handing him the knife to cut himself free. In the ensuing melee, the universe continues to right itself when Jin shoots Mikhail and makes him a cyclopse once more. I am very VERY afeared, however, at the implications for the other reality of a pregnant Sun getting shot in the region of the belly.

- Oh, and speaking of Sun, she runs into a tree and gets the English knocked out of her, but that does not stop her from GOING TOTALLY BADASS and essentially saying "To hell with this, I'm going to find my man and get the heck out of Dodge." *hi-fives her bigtime*

And last but not least...

- What's "the package" that's been locked up on the sub? IT'S DESMOND THE CONSTANT, BROTHAH! Someone guessed this exact thing two weeks ago in the Sawyer episode, and they were right! What this means for the remaining episodes is all too clear to me. Let's cast our minds back over a few things. Desmond was the one who blew the hatch and destroyed the electromagnetic anomaly. The explosion should have killed him, but instead blew his clothes off and gave him the ability to see the future, which we saw him do repeatedly in Season Three. In Season Four, he had an episode where he traveled back and forth between his current (2004) self and his 1996 self, in a way that could hardly be more analogous to the two timelines our characters are experiencing this season. And why are there two timelines? Because Jack and the gang set off the bomb in the 1970s to destroy the electromagnetic anomaly, which then eliminated the chain of events that led to the plane crash. Desmond was also the one to have that crucial conversation with Eloise Hawking about the universe correcting itself.

Desmond, more than any other character in the series, has been the most significant vessel for the mechanics of the island, most especially the time travel elements. He is associated with it over and over again. And now he is being brought, pretty clearly against his will, back to the island, along with Widmore's team of geophysicists who seem extremely interested in the electromagnetic properties of the island. It's clear as day to me that Desmond is going to be instrumental in bringing the two timelines together. We've already seen the characters in the non-crash reality have moments of recognition of things from the crash reality.

Something Drew McWeeny pointed out that I had not noticed, but I'm fairly sure I need to go back and look for, is that in every single episode so far, we see the episode's central character look into a mirror (MIRROR) in the non-crash timeline. And in Sun's case, this marks a change in her behavior from that point forward - in both timelines.

I think this show is just getting warmed up, and our worlds are about to be seriously rocked.

Next week is all about Desmond, and let me just say this - LOST, IF YOU KILL DESMOND THIS IS WAR!
