Okay, I guess it's official - I'm a total whore for Jimmy Stewart. This is his third appearance in one of these posts, but I can't help it! He has had some GREAT screen kisses, and today's is no exception.
From my favorite Hitchcock movie,
Jeff & Lisa - Rear Window
One of my favorite things about this kiss is that split second before you see Grace Kelly's face, where you see the shadow you think Jeff might be in danger. This is probably also my favorite Hitchcock romance. Jeff is crazy about Lisa, and the feelings are fully returned, but Jeff doesn't see a future for them, given his job and its perceived incompatibility with Lisa's glamorous Manhattan lifestyle. He's a photojournalist, see, and his job often leads him into dangerous territory.
I absolutely adore the way their relationship is presented. They have problems, but Lisa at least is more than willing to do whatever it takes to make it work. And the climax of the film kind of hinges on her thirst to prove to Jeff that she's tougher than she looks.
I also feel that this kiss is a noteworthy example of less is more. All this really is is a few light kisses, but it's steamier and sexier than just about any old French kiss you've ever seen. The up-close talking probably adds something to it as well, I suppose. I know many H/G fans, and I was one of them at the very first, were sad to lose the "sunlit days" HBP kiss in favor of a tamer peck on the lips in a completely different context of the story. But take another gander at Jeff & Lisa's kiss for encouragement. Sometimes less really is sexier.
