Dadgummit!

That's three this week. First Anthony Minghella, then Arthur C. Clarke, and now...

Paul Scofield died yesterday at the age of 86. He is probably best known for his Oscar-winning performance as Sir Thomas More in 1966 Best Picture winner A Man For All Seasons, a role he reprised from his original stage performance. The last time I saw him, and indeed the last time he made a film, was in The Crucible, where he was Judge Danforth to Daniel Day-Lewis's John Proctor. And I wasn't aware of this until today, but he originated the role of Salieri on stage in Peter Shaffer's Amadeus.

So much talent gone in so short a time.
