7:00 - GRRRR! I ruuuuuushed home, because the Oscar website said the show started at 7pm. What they didn't say was that the first thirty minutes of the broadcast was ABC's hokey red-carpet show. This is my LEAST favorite part of the night, because I am so embarrassed for the stars and for the people interviewing them.
More updates here as the night goes on, but not until the REAL show starts. :P
7:31 - Okay, this is verrry similar to an intro they did ... I think the last time Jon Stewart hosted.
7:33 - Makeup sex LOL! ... Thank God for teen pregnancy! ... I only say that so Dennis [Hopper] knows where he is. ... Withdrawing the Iraq movies will only embolden the audience! ... Titler had so many good ideas!
Stewart is on fire tonight!
7:41 - Great dress, Garner, but that hair would be seriously bugging me. Costume design - okay, please not Elizabeth. Ugh. I'm sorry, but those costumes are such a physical reminder of how ridiculously over the top that movie is.
7:43 - Babs! "Hello, gorgeous!"
7:50 - WHY did they pick this Celine Dion song for a montage?!?!?!?!?!
7:54 - RATATOUILLE, FTW!
7:58 - Yay, La Vie en Rose! It takes a lot of makeup to make Marion Cotillard look that bad. :P
7:59 - Yeah, I so don't get why this movie has three song nominations. On the other hand, I'm really glad they haven't (yet) felt the need to recreate the movie with a cheesy dance number.
8:07 - Smell what the Rock is cookin'! Pirates better win, is all I'm saying. The Golden Compass? *sigh*
8:10 - SWEENEY WINS ONE!!! The orchestra is butchering that music, though.
8:13 - Cate Blanchett played the pit bull in No Country, LOL! I love these flashbacks to the older ceremonies. Jennifer Hudson, WOOT! YESSSSS, JAVIER!!!!!!! What a great villain. And what a great speech.
8:23 - HAHAHA, Oscars salute to binoculars and periscopes and bad dreams!
8:27 - Okay, so it might have been a mistake for me to pass on August Rush. This song is incredible.
*hugs Owen Wilson*
8:32 - YAY, Peter and the Wolf! Hopefully this will be on YouTube or something eventually. It's definitely worth a look.
8:34 - Okay, this should be interesting. UNCA LOU! He even used the phrase "golden age"! I'm rather glad to see Tilda get this. I haven't been that fond of her, but she really nailed this part. And OMG I think she's really going to give it to her agent!
8:40 - Sidney Poitier, you are The Man!
There haven't been any Best Picture clips yet. Usually they sprinkle those throughout the night. I wonder what's going on there.
8:46 - asjdkfh;asdkjfhasd;hf Josh Brolin and James McAvoy doing a little soft shoe. Kind of early for writing awards, but okay. COEN BROTHERS, YES!!!
*sigh* This is RECYCLED drivel, Sid Ganis!
8:56 - I'm going to say one more time, much as I love Kristen Chenowith, that it's just bizarre that Idina Menzel - who was actually in the movie - had nothing to do with any of the music, either in the film or in these three performances. Though obviously Chenowith is a more appropriate person to sing a Giselle song.
9:02 - Seth and Jonah as Halle and Judi! "Obviously, I'm Halle Berry."
9:09 - Seems early for Best Actress, too. Forest, you rile! OMG YES, MARION COTILLARD!!! Dude, I think the cynics may be right - Oscar tends to go for the younger actresses.
9:17 - HAHA, Jon Stewart playing Wii!
9:18 - Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova!!!! Gosh, I love this song!
9:22 - What's Jack presenting that's not Best Picture?! Well, LOL, sort of Best Picture. :P This is almost exactly the same montage they did at the 1997 Oscars. :P Well, except that there will be 10 more.
9:27 - Dude, Renee, you don't have to work it QUITE that much. Three now for The Bourne Ultimatum. I think it might be the winningest movie so far!
9:34 - Wow, Robert Boyle is old! [/obvious] What a life, though, gosh.
9:43 - Best Documentary ... it always seems to be the Holocaust picture, doesn't it? The Counterfeiters is coming pretty soon to the US, though, and I'm hoping to see it.
9:45 - This is a very typical movie ballad, and the dramatization is reminding me of that thing I really, really didn't like about Enchanted.
9:48 - That makes two people who have almost killed themselves slipping on whatever is on the floor up there. OMG YES, GLEN AND MARKETA!!!!!!!!!!!!
9:57 - Way to give Marketa her chance at the mic, Jon. *loves*
9:58 - I'll be shocked if Cinematography doesn't go to Atonement. ... Color me shocked! Way to go, There Will Be Blood! And way to quote John Toll, who I'm pretty sure was referring to his experience with Legends of the Fall.
10:01 - Break out the kleenex, here comes the Memorial. WTF? They left out Brad Renfro!
10:09 - And the Score Oscar goes to that maddeningly type-key-ridden score from Atonement. I didn't mean that to sound as bitter as it probably did. :P It's a really great score.
10:12 - Hello, troops! Oh cool, they're presenting one! ... Okay, that may be the ugliest dress I've ever seen. ... Breathe, woman! ... Wow, the Doc features all sound hella depressing. ... Great speech from the winnar.
10:25 - Diablo Cody wins, and I think she stole that dress from Wilma Flinstone!
10:28 - And here goes the most foregone conclusion of the night. ... Cool dress, Helen. ... Yep, DDL.
10:40 - Director. ... Presented by Scorsese! ... COENS, YAY!
10:44 - Here we go. ... no clips this year? ... No Country. Awesome.
Favorite joke of the night - "The baby goes to ... Angelina Jolie."
More updates here as the night goes on, but not until the REAL show starts. :P
