GM(ovie)P - The Big Lebowski

And here we come (finally!) to the end of the 90s on Premiere's "100 Greatest Performances" list.

90. Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski
The Big Lebowski (1998)

How did I never see this movie until yesterday?! This was the Coen brothers' follow-up to their masterpiece, 1996's Fargo. These guys are the kings of putting ordinary schmoes in extraordinary circumstances, and there's no one schmoe-ier than The Dude. His Dudeness. The Dude-arino, if you're not into the brevity thing.

This movie is chock full of all the wonderfully Coen-ish characters that always imbue their movies with a sublime kind of quirkiness. They're sort of hyper-real people, where you know you've met people like them, and yet no one is like them. John Goodman almost steals the show as the annoying best friend who you want to slap but can't help laughing at ("You're out of your element, Donnie.") But The Dude - his philosophy, his vibe, his (non)energy - is what makes the movie. He's the greatest pot-smoking, apathetic, antihero to ever hit the silver screen and go on a quest for a rug.
