Taking a break from the horror series for a moment to update on what I've been doing besides that lately.
Boss's Day Out
Yesterday, my boss was out of town and I was in charge of the children's area. This is usually not that big a deal. However, when I got to church yesterday morning, I had a message from the people who were supposed to substitute for our Ones Sunday School class. The wife was sick and her husband would probably not make it to Sunday School. So it was suddenly my job to find some last minute teachers. In addition to recruiting, I had to make sure the morning's baby dedication (with two small children, instead of the usual one) ran smoothly. This was kind of a challenge, as the smallest child - 3 month old Sophia - was having a bout of acid reflux, complete with spittings-up. And the older child, 2-year-old Isabella, had been dressed in a special dedication gown, which came down almost to the floor. This proved to be a delicate situation when our pastor, his arms already full with the infant, had to get Isabella to follow him around the sanctuary ... aaaaand up the steps to the platform and choir loft. Bless her heart, Isabella was a trooper, lifting up her dress so that she wouldn't trip and taking the huge steps up and down.
There was another adventure during the children's sermon. I knew that I'd have to miss choir and sit in the congregation for this, because there is usually a delicate flower arrangement in front of the pulpit that my boss has to keep the children from playing with. I checked the Sanctuary before worship and the flowers were out of the children's reach, but something told me I should keep an eye on the children's sermon anyway, and that something was right. There were a couple of standup microphones in the area where the children were going to sit. The kids seemed to ignore them at first, but one little girl, sure enough, decided to try and pick one of them up, despite its being about four times her height. I shot to the front just in time and sat on the floor of the Sanctuary with the children to keep their hands off the mic for the rest of the children's sermon. I had more people tell me "great save" yesterday after worship than usually speak to me in a month. :P
Moviegoing
I've seen two very good new movies in the past couple of weeks. The first is The Science of Sleep. This is by Michel Gondry, who brought us Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and this new film is similarly trippy, but much more so, I think. I don't even think I can describe it without giving a full-on review, which I don't feel like doing right now. :P But it stars Gael Garcia Bernal as a guy whose dreams are a talk show where he's the host. It's very funny and sweet, even if it's insane, and Bernal's character reminded me quite a bit of me in his neediness. :P
I also saw The Departed, which is AMAZING! You'd think, with Jack Nicholson in the movie, that he'd be the center of interest and overshine everyone else, but that's not the case here. It's not that his is a weak performace at all, but everyone else's is SO great that they easily match his. I really don't want to give anything away about this, because it's best to just experience this story as a blank slate. It's essentially Leo's and Matt's show, and they are very VERY good, but there are lots of minor players (Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, etc.) who are really at the top of their game here. In particular, Mark Wahlberg OWNS ALL. He is the best thing about the movie, in my opinion. If you have a chance to see this, DO IT. It's got a Hamlet ending, but it's so much fun along the way.
Veronica Mars
Loved the season opener, but I can see the strings getting ready to yank the LoVe right out from under us. I'm loving the new mystery arcs, though. *rubs hands in excitement*
The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
It's almost time for the annual post about how to get tickets for Butt-Numb-A-Thon! *strings lights and garland and makes eggnog*
