connielane: (galaxy quest - GAH!)

Do any of you (or did you, as this show started back in 1999) watch Farscape? I started it when it became the next "double feature" project on Mark Watches, expecting to give it a few episodes and then tire of it. BUT I LOVE IT AND WHERE HAS IT BEEN ALL MY LIFE. It's exactly the kind of show I would not have sought out, because I've never been that comfortable with sci-fi unless it's in combination with another genre (like Firefly).

Speaking of Firefly, Farscape reminds me of it SO MUCH (even though there are actually more differences than similarities). Mainly because it's about a rag-tag group of space travelers who become a surrogate family. If you've never seen it, I *highly* recommend checking it out on Netflix Instant or Amazon Prime Instant. Here are just a few of the reasons it's one of my new favorite things:

- AMAZING alien make-up and prosthetics by the Jim Henson Company, who also designed two UNBELIEVABLY emotive animatronic puppet characters WHO ARE AMONG THE MAIN CHARACTERS IN THE SHOW;

- complex morality and moral ambiguity, which I love more than most things, and complicated villains;

- a wonderful (and heartbreaking) romance at the center of the show -- I've actually only just started the second season, but I know things about the future and I'm certain these two will be the death of me; it's an icy-to-blazing combative love story, so you know I'm all over that;

- the human who is the main character is the ONLY human we see on the show after the first few minutes, and HE'S the alien in his new environment; he also constantly makes pop culture references that NO ONE BUT HIM UNDERSTANDS (besides the audience);

- the show doesn't take place in the future, the implication being that other galaxies are phenomenally more advanced than ours in terms of space travel and interacting with other life forms.

It's just an incredible piece of worldbuilding, and I'm constantly astounded by how many different types of aliens they come up with for these stories. It takes a bit to get into -- there's a bit of a slump in the middle of the first season, but if you can make it to the last third of that season (pretty much everything after "Jeremiah Crichton"), that's where it really kicks into gear.
