Sydney Pollack, one of the great American filmmakers, died yesterday of cancer at age 73. He's best known for his directorial efforts - Tootsie, The Way We Were, Out of Africa, Three Days of the Condor, Absence of Malice, and Jeremiah Johnson, among others - but he also did some great acting work (including a recent role in Michael Clayton). He also did a memorable PSA for movie theaters urging people to turn their cell phones off during the movie. :P
A salute to you, sir, for the gifts you brought to our movie screens. You will be sorely, sorely missed.
