Many of you know of my deep and increasing interest in all things horror. And you might know me additionally as an enthusiast of the “so bad it’s good” school of film appreciation. Let’s face it, sometimes schlock can be a lot of fun, and speaking personally, I find bad movies much more enjoyable than mediocre ones. I mean, the production value may be crap, but at least the movie is memorable, y/y?

So when my new favorite movie blog, Final Girl, chose as its monthly “Film Club” selection a 1970s weirdfest called The Manitou, I knew I would be in for a fun ride. Here is the Netflix description, followed by the original trailer:

When Karen (Susan Strasberg) tries to have a tumor removed, she discovers it's actually the deformed fetus of an ancient Native American shaman ready to be reincarnated. Soon, the evil spirit bursts forth, and Karen turns to a sham psychic (Tony Curtis) and a contemporary medicine man (Michael Ansara) for a showdown with the murderous creature. Stella Stevens, Burgess Meredith and Jon Cedar co-star in this campy chiller.

Oh yes. It's a movie about a Creepy Tumor-Fetus of Doom. Sort of. Starring Tony Curtis and Lee Strasberg's daughter. With a special appearance by Burgess Meredith. Let me see if I can walk you through it, because even if you have no desire to see this movie, I believe that just knowing about it and its bizarreness might improve your life a little.

Normally I wait three risings of the sun before I take on a job. )
