Some good choices, and some bad ones )

Okay, the good: Yay for George Clooney and his three well-deserved nominations. Yay for Rachel Weisz. Yay for the Crash nominations. And YAY for the Walk the Line acting nominations.

The bad: Boo. BOOOOO on King Kong being shut out of Best Picture, as well as Naomi Watts for Best Actress. Especially when a mediocre film like A History of Violence got a nod. And I know it's a crowded category, but I can't believe Ralph Fiennes didn't get nominated for The Constant Gardener. That movie belongs to him, and if it's good it's largely because of him.

Lead actress nominees are kind of a yawn this year, actually. Charlize Theron is the only one in the drama category that really seems like she belongs there. Although, I've heard great things about Transamerica - so I'll reserve judgement on Felicity Huffman, who I know to be a phenomenal actress already.

* Am now settled in Mordor after a highly pleasant visit with [livejournal.com profile] themorningstarr. Much House has been watched, and I've fondled my new Kong Production Diaries DVD box far too much already. :P

* Went to see Narnia this past Friday with [livejournal.com profile] themorningstarr and her neighbor. I really enjoyed it. The effects were amazing, the children were adorable and played their parts well (especially Lucy, though I have a soft spot for Edmund and a slightly pervy crush on Peter), and the talking animals weren't as weird as I was afraid they might be. I thought they might have been steeling the audience for what happens to Susan, though. And I think that is my only complaint. Or maybe just knowing what happens with her in the last chronicle colored my perception.

* Went to see Syriana yesterday. It's a very good movie, but difficult to like, I think. It's a bit like the Gaghan-scripted Traffic, in that there are lots of different stories happening and many of them don't connect. I think the idea of the film is that the situation in the Middle East is more complicated than ... well, anyone knows. Even people who live there. There's no straightforward way to "fix" things, and who gets to decide what's best anyway? A very intelligent and thought-provoking film.

* I bought my first BNAT 7 movie this afternoon. I saw The Professionals on the shelf at Target and couldn't not get it. I can't wait to see Burt Lancaster pwn Claudia Cardinale again.

* My Psych professor in college once had a student who asked her friends about contraceptives. On one of her friends' advice, she decided to use jelly. Only the friend - not realizing how little the girl knew about contraceptives - didn't specify spermicidal jelly. So ... she bought a jar of grape jelly from Kroger and applied some to her you-know-what. Naturally, she got an infection, and had to go to the doctor - and explain what happened, of course. The exact same thing happened on House tonight - except with strawberry jelly. Couldn't help thinking of Prof. Carskadon.

* And speaking of putting strange things in special places, I may never look at Pez dispensers the same way again. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] miss_celestine! :P
