Best claymation movie EVER? Quite possibly.

Chicken Run

It starts with a montage. Various escape attempts - one of which is a reference to The Great Escape, and all of which land Ginger in "solitary" (the garbage bin). Ginger (Lydia Bennett Julia Sawalha) and the other chickens on Tweedy's Farm lay egg after egg after egg, and they're sick and tired of it. But escaping becomes urgent when they find out that they're about to be fattened up and killed to make chicken pot pies.

Pause for one of my favorite lines in the whole movie... "I don't want to be a pie! I don't like gravy."

They meet their unwitting hero in Rocky (Mel Gibson), a circus rooster who "flies" (read: gets shot out of a canon), and he spends most of the movie trying to avoid telling them the truth.

As you'll recognize from the picture, this movie is done by the same peeps who make Wallace and Gromit (and whose Curse of the Were-Rabbit hits theaters in the fall - squee!). I adore their characters' faces and the expressions. There's something so distinctly "British humor" about them. And the movie in general.

I *love* all the little characters in this movie. Ginger, the leader; Babs, the airhead; Bunty, the mother hen; Mac, the tech nerd; Fowler, the "captain"; and the two rat entrepeneurs (voiced by HP actors Timothy Spall and Mark Williams). Babs (voiced by the amazing Jane Horrocks) is my alltime favorite, though. Everything she says is gold. And she KNITS -- Teh HAWTNESS!!!

Babs: Morning, Ginger! Back from holiday?
Ginger: I wasn't on holiday, Babs! I was in solitary confinement!
Babs: Awww. It's nice to get a bit of time to yourself, isn't it?

This is a funny, funny movie, and I can't believe how long it's been since I've seen it. The most fun you'll ever have watching a bunch of chickens.

Vacation Bible School starts tomorrow, meaning a couple of hundred kids will be coming through the church doors. This is the biggest outreach event my particular ministry does, and it takes a lot of people to make it work. We've been planning for months, but no matter what we do, the last few days are always hectic. This year has been no exception. I think the fact that I'm missing the last day of it to go out of town has kicked my desire to go above and beyond the call of duty up a notch. I'm very tired, but I'm not dreading the first day like I was last year. I think we're ready.

It's been exceedingly tense getting ready for this at the same time that the fandom has been so crazy. And it's just going to get worse in the coming week. But at 8:15 Thursday night I'll be on a plane headed for friends, fellowship, and what I'm convinced will be a great read. At least I'll have something to keep me busy these last few agonizing days. :P
