I intend to do a full write-up of my own experiences, but here are two Short Lists. The first is the actual BNAT list and, since neither the application process nor standby worked out for me this year, the second is what I screened for myself at Me-NAT.
Butt-Numb-A-Thon 14 (aka BNAT: The Lucky Number, aka BNAT14WOLF)
1. Teen Wolf (1985) - The whole movie this time (well, almost), not just a couple of minutes before the reel burned in the projector. I say almost because, not being able to resist screwing with Jeff Mahler, the reel DID burn up a few minutes from the end. Cries of "What happened to Boof?" erupted on Twitter.
2. The Hobbit (2012) - In 3D and 48fps. Many loved it, but not all.
3. Broadway Melody of 1940 (1940, obviously) - Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell in a classic MGM musical.
4. The Gang's All Here (1943) - Featuring Carmen Miranda, who you probably know better as "that woman who wears the fruit on her head."
5. Mama (2013) - Spanish horror film exec produced by Guillermo del Toro. You may have seen the trailer, with Jessica Chastain and that guy from Game of Thrones.
6. Libeled Lady (1936) - Classic screwball comedy with Jean Harlow, William Powell, Myrna Loy, and Spencer Tracy.
7. [SECRET FILM - code name, "Brain Damage"] - This was a premiere, but if I told you the title I'd be shocked if you'd heard of it. Was apparently the WTF?! movie of the night. Some people who didn't attend figured this one out and blabbed on Twitter as soon as it screened. Losers.
8. Nightmare Alley (1947) - Tyrone Power makes his second BNAT appearance, this time as a carnival barker, not a pirate. And probably (sadly) not shirtless.
9. White Heat (1949) - Classic James Cagney, and probably his greatest role. The movie that gave us "MADE IT, MA! TOP OF THE WORLD!"
10. Rollerball (1975) - No doubt a hit with the handful of roller derby enthusiasts in the audience.
11. Bullet to the Head (2013) - Stallone kicking ass.
aaaaaaaaand…
Me-NAT
1. Lifeforce (1985) - Naked space vampires in 70mm.
2. Road House (1948) - No Swayze, but a couple of barroom brawls nonetheless.
3. The Toy Box (1971) - This would be MY WTF movie of the night.
4. Cat Dancers (2008) - I leave you to imagine what this could possibly be until I post the long version.
5. Juan of the Dead (2011) - Zombie movie with Cuban flair.
6. Lincoln (2012) - Still my fave of the year, unless Django, Les Mis, or Amour (or something else) unseats it.
