Oh, Locke. SO much has happened to you since you made that trip to Sydney.

The guy who we think at first is just a mysterious, perhaps creepy, guy gets even mysteriouser in the fourth episode, "Walkabout." This is where, for me, the flashbacks took on a unique purpose. They weren't just a character suddenly remembering something. They were slices of the characters' lives, shared between the show and the audience, that informed what was happening with the central character that week.

We see Locke in the "real world," taking crap from his super-douchey boss, and we learn that he was on the Oceanic flight because he had gone to Sydney for a walkabout. On the island, he reveals his wicked collection of knifes (insert Crocodile Dundee reference here) and leads a hunting party to look for wild boar. But it's the final flashback that gives this episode the juice and adds another layer of mystery to the island. Locke is being told he can't go on the walkabout, despite having made his reservation and paid his money. Why? Because he's wheelchair-bound and cannot walk. So then how is he not only walking around on the island but slaying a boar by himself?

It wasn't the last time the show would reference the healing powers of the island. Interestingly, one of the side stories features Rose, another character who was miraculously healed by the island. And this was the first episode where I got a religious vibe from the show. Damon and Carlton have talked recently about the whole issue of order vs. chaos, and that while they feel both points of view have valid arguments, it would be a copout not to land on one side or the other after all this time. They won't say, in as many words, which side the show will ultimately end up on, but I think moments like this have answered that question repeatedly since almost the beginning of the series.
