Thoughts on Glee ("Bad Reputation")

Overall, not as strong as "Home" but still enjoyable. The weakest link, I think, was the music (starting with Will's sad-larious rendition of "Ice, Ice, Baby"). Hardly surprising, since most of the songs were supposed to be lame, at least in reputation terms.

* Okay, can we stop with the obligatory moment in each episode where a character, usually Will, drops the title awkwardly into the dialogue?

* Loved the new version of "Physical" with Sue and Olivia, but I don't think we needed the full video. I think its being so long forced them to cut up the final number to its detriment.

* I think the point of the Glist was lost on pretty much everyone - the characters, the audience, the writers. It was originally billed as a ranking of who was the most sexually promiscuous, but then the characters seemed to think it was about reputations in general, judging from the C-listers attempts to be badasses to get on the list. And by the way, can I just say how hilarious it is that the worst thing they could think of to do was cause a ruckus in the library? Speaking of which...

* LOL "U Can't Touch This"!!! IN HAMMER PANTS! AND SHORT JACKETS WITH SHOULDER PADS AND EPAULETS!

* I had thought (and I'm sure I'm not alone) that Jesse was cultivating Rachel for nefarious glee-club-competition-related purposes, and that still may turn out to be true (I don't feel like I can count on things like character development on this show at all). But while the reason for their split wasn't quite believable, he really seemed to have liked her. Props to Jonathan Groff for selling it.

* He didn't have too many scenes, but I was kind of digging Finn this week, especially when he confronted Rachel. Call me boring if you want, but I still totally ship them.

* I kind of felt like Molly Shannon's presence was wasted. Hopefully there'll be some more substantial stuff for her later.

* Don't hate me, but I kind of love "Run Joey Run." And Rachel's music video was priceless (more tank top Puck, please!). By the way, if you want to hear the original version of the song, as well as see an awesomely bad music video, CLICK HERE. It was made in 1975, has a comic book feel to it, and a girl singing the "Daddy please don't" sections ever-so-slightly off key. I highly recommend checking it out.

* One of the things I love about the writing is how hysterically self-aware it is. Sue's comment about "slow-motion laughter" (as well as "even in voiceover" from a couple weeks back) was great - though she repeated it way too many times.

* Good to see Sue's sister again. There are times when Sue is over-the-top, but she is actually the most layered character on the show.

* WAY TO GO, EMMA! She and Will are cute together, but thank God the writers let her get over the schoolgirl nature of her feelings, see Will's flaws, and put her foot down. I think it was kind of great that it was Sue that encouraged her to do it, too.

* "Total Eclipse of the Heart" was one of the better closers they've done, but I'm afraid I can't ever hear that song again without thinking of the Literal Version ("Get out of my way, I gotta pee!").
